The Power of Positive Visualization

In my professional life, I recommend to my patients that they practice a bit of time travel. I ask them to imagine traveling into the future and to make positive visualizations about the time to come. They can imagine whatever they wish, but it must be positive. By focusing our minds on positivity, we can learn to quiet the internal negative voice as we start projecting positive growth in our lives. Positive visualization allows us to quiet our minds and to bring order to our thoughts. It allows us to harness the power of our imagination. I believe our imagination is a powerful tool that is underutilized. The world’s greatest achievements only exist because someone imagined them. Airplanes only exist because humans dared to imagine flight.

By practicing daily positive visualizations, we can begin to clear any blockage caused by our negative core beliefs. Many of these dark thoughts are caused by past trauma, which invades our present lives causing us chaos and pain. Anchored to past trauma, we are unable to move forward. We habitually return to moments in our lives when extreme emotions such as pain and fear create a cognitive stumble that acts as a roadblock to future happiness. By letting go of the past, we can set the stage for a more positive future path and set the course for a healthier and more successful life.

By engaging in positive visualization, we allow ourselves to have mental rehearsals to our desired future. This creates mental pathways and patterns necessary for the events to happen. The future world we create in our imagination becomes so alluring that we will take action to make it happen. We will begin to take the necessary steps to create and affirm our future world. We are training our mind to believe that what we want to be true is already true.

Here are some of the amazing benefits of visualization:

1. Performance
Visualization is frequently used by elite athletes to improve their performance in training and competition. For example, an athlete will visualize themselves making the free throw to win the game. Another may focus on beating their marathon time. By rehearsing the outcome, they begin to believe in the visualized future. Research shows that mental practice is almost as effective as physical practice and that doing both is more effective than doing only one. In one study, some participants went to the gym and lifted weights and other participants did both. The participants that did both had more muscle mass than the other group. Further, the participants who only visualized had an increase in muscle mass.

2. Increased relaxation
Visualizing a positive experience allows us to block out the excessive external stimulation and helps us focus on the pleasant experience. Our body will respond by lowering our heart rate and we will experience relaxation as if we are actually encountering the experience.

2. Increased joy
Daily visualization is an instant mood booster. The only limitation to the joy you can experience is your imagination. Visualize yourself surrounded by something pleasurable that leaves you grinning from ear to ear. Puppies? Kittens? How about both! I guarantee you will open your eyes and be in a better mood.

3. Better health
Visualization will help reduce stress, relax your mind and increase the “happy” in your life. This will help lower your blood pressure, increase your white blood cells and keep you healthy.

4. Improved focus
With visualization, you are training your mind to focus in extreme detail. By practicing visualization repeatedly, your mind will be less restless and you will be able to focus more easily.

5. Greater goal achievement
When you visualize yourself accomplishing your goals, you are more likely to attempt the necessary steps in order to make them a reality.

Here are some steps to visualize a happier, healthier and more successful future. Make sure to engage all of your senses:

a) Visual
Create a vision board and externalize your thoughts by using imagery. Use photographs, magazine cutouts or images of people succeeding in areas related to your goal. Acknowledge every milestone towards your goal. Visualize yourself achieving what you desire.

b) Auditory
Write down your visualizations using as much detail as possible and read them back to yourself. We can also use the sounds of nature to visualize ourselves in a tranquil place away from traffic and other stressors. We can listen to the birds chirping and the wind moving through the trees. If we are preparing for a competition, we can imagine the applause or roar of the crowd as we take our victory lap.

c) Kinesthetic
Pay attention to how your body feels. Imagine yourself in the desired outcome and role play. If you are trying to get a promotion, play the role with a friend or your partner. Play out the act of accepting the promotion and say your acceptance speech. Have fun and use props! Perhaps, write yourself a check as your signing bonus.

d) Olfactory
Certain scents evoke pleasant feelings while others might repulse us. What smell makes you think of home or of love? Use your nose to set the mood. Light a scented candle that reminds you of a pleasant time or surround yourself with vases of freshly cut flowers.

e) Gustatory
When possible, use your sense of taste. If there is somewhere you wish to visit, include visualizing and tasting the food. While in Paris I had the pleasure of eating a freshly baked lemon tart. Even now, I can close my eyes and imagine myself biting into it. My mouth will respond by salivating as if I am tasting the sourness of the lemon. Yum!

    Hi Dr. Perry, wonderful article. You are so right, if we can learn to quiet our internal negative voice we can bring order to our thoughts. We often believe we are ‘managed’ by our minds, but we really have so much control over them, if we will just do the work. Positive visualization is a great way to start, and continue this process…

    This is a wonderful reminder. I visualize daily, it is a sort of conscious meditation if I might use the term as such. It really relaxes me and pushes me forward. Since ancient times philosophers claimed that our own thoughts will determine the outcome of everything in our lives. So, I guess event+ our reaction to it = outcome (life in general).

  12. Dr Perry I have to say my CBT advisor has been trying to get me to do some of these techniques and I have struggled to understand how it works.
    Thank you so much for this blog, it has broken down each step into a way my mind can and has absorbed the information.
    Im about to start the read ‘the secret’ ive been made to think that this book is on the similar lines to your teaching.
    Ive recently wrote a blog regarding the circle challenge, I would love it if you could pop over the my page and read it. Ive also got a journal with all my goals and dreams in and where I want to be in 5 years time.
    Im a natural explorer and struggle with structured hierarchy jobs.

  13. I started using visualization as I became aware of my psychic abilities and being an empath. It was the only way to tame my “monkey brain.” This process was a little difficult at first, but the more I practiced with my visualization the more it helped me in so many ways! I too believe in positive vibrational energy to use as a tool to bring about change in our lives! I truly enjoy your articles! Thank you for sharing!

I use visualisation myself before competitions, and I find that the more detail I break down my race into, the more effective it is, rather than just focusing on an end goal. It definitely prepares your mind, so I’m really glad you’ve spread the word!

  19. I LOVE to visualize! ❤ It is SO MUCH FUN! ❤ I take 5 to 10 minutes each day and lay back, close my eyes, or leave them open, and visualize my new reality. When I do this each day it speeds up my manifestations! ❤ Great article! Manifesting is so much fun! ❤ I manifested 99% of my desires in 10 months through various forms of visualizations! ❤ ❤ ❤

  21. I have done it on death, a bit challenging. But It also gave me a positive experience afterward. I was triggered by a friend who was suffering from brain tumor. Because death will surely come to everyone. Then I visualized how I am facing my death when it comes. How I will feel. How I will deal with it. How I have to let go my material possession and achievement. Then I wrote it. A few days after that, I was in conversation with a friend. I can’t remember what we’re discussing but he said ‘are you ready to die?’ I said ‘yes!’. The feeling of acceptance and readiness came from the visualization.

  28. Hi Dr. Perry. I really like the idea about thinking of a better version of ourselves in the future. Imagining ourselves in a better situation is motivating. But with all this focus on the future, what about the present? If we don’t like where we currently are, how do we push ourselves to work towards what we ideally want to see in our future?

It takes a ton of courage to seek guidance from someone outside of our circle because to some degree it means admitting that what we are doing isn’t working. Hope that helps✨

    Lemon tarts sound awesome!
    In the process of an in-depth writing project that demands positive thinking. Also, at a point in life where a lot of reflection on past trauma is surfacing. Tempted to meld the two, but I am not sure this is a good idea. I think my past experience (being in close proximity to a mass shooting) may be helpful to others. Is there a time that re-living or sharing those past items can also be “therapeutic” ?

You not only spoke of how I live my life each day, but you also used Uncle Albert! ❤ LOVE this post! ❤ I do my mindset journaling every single day, I go on a "date" with my manifestations I am calling into my physical realm (using the smells of the candles, closing my eyes and visualizing, writing it all down in detail, and drinking my favorite beverage while doing all of this on my "date"). ❤ I put my hair the way I like it, put on some make-up, and dress comfortably and cute beforehand so I become my version 2.0 self practicing that it IS ALREADY in existence. ❤ Great blog article and I completely concur! ❤ I manifested so much so quickly doing these kinds of things each day- especially writing it all down and writing with conviction.

  34. This is so awesome and I can attest to the benefits of positive thinking/visualization. I have found that in times of great stress I can relapse into the negative spiral that I lived for too many years, partly due to trauma. Fortunately, I have learned to pull myself out of it via meditation and visualization exercises. “As within, so without.” Or, in other words, what you think about you bring about.

    I am at my best when I am in a positive frame of mind, and when I am there really great stuff happens. Conversely a negative frame of mind usually means I have mishaps like burning my hand while removing something from the oven. Plus, negative thoughts leave me feeling exhausted and unable to deal efficiently with the daily grind.

    June McIntyre has wonderful relaxation CDs, which I recommend. And there are several free relaxation meditations on YouTube – isn’t it great to live in this technological world? LOL

    I don’t know why I stopped doing it, but I am glad to be reminded of this.

I am a true believer in the power of visualization to achieve an outcome or better outcome but just don’t have much practice.
