“I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I feel my fate in what I cannot fear. I learn by going where I have to go.” ~Theodore Roethke
I enjoy waking up before my alarm clock and laying in silence, surrounded by the familiar comfort of my home. I am an active dreamer both in sleep and in life. Often I wake in the middle of a dream and am left to wonder what was in the next scene. Within the safety of my dreams, I soar through the clouds and climb every mountaintop, all in a single night.
There is always a second of excitement when I open my eyes and become aware that I am awake and no longer dreaming. I am always overjoyed to be alive. My dreams are fantastic, but life is just more of everything. As I take a deep breath I slowly become aware of my body as my essence fills my arms and legs. Not fully awake, my brain slowly fires up as I start to go over what I have planned for the day. In this semi-awake state, safely cocooned in my blanket, I feel I can conquer the world. I allow my mind to wander, cradled by the quiet of the room. Slowly, the veil of sleep is lifted and it’s time to face the world.
This past year has given me both pain and joy; not in equal amounts. Life is an ever-changing blend of sweet and sour. Sometimes it parallels the sweetness of honey and other times it can be as sour as a lemon. It is easy to become overwhelmed when we think of the frailty of life. Every day of our lives we have one foot stepping forward into the unknown while the other momentarily remains suspended in the past. Life is a flux of constant energy in motion. We grasp for it, only to momentarily hold onto it, as it slips away.
I wish I had the ability to suspend the forward motion of time. I would choose to live in certain moments of my life; only moving on when I was completely ready to do so. Sadly, life does not allow us to hit the pause or replay button. Every moment blooms and wilts replaced by countless others. We must treat our time with reverence and not waste it foolishly. Life should be lived consciously and not in a state of reverie.
Although it is fleeting, life with all its layers of complexity is more than any dream. I would much rather spend my life awake; facing challenges and engaging with others than asleep in the safety of a dream. This coming year I am setting the intention to engage in conscious living. I am not going to allow my life to be overshadowed by my dreams.
What intention are you setting for the new year?
Thank you for reading,

Last year, I didn’t set any intentions, really, or make any resolutions. This was not in my best interest. I have a lot I want to accomplish this coming year, but the biggest thing of all is to stop allowing fear to curb me- it has kept me from so much, and I have allowed it. I am soooo strong. I truly believe I can have the life of my dreams with just a few minor adjustments, and the letting go of fear and insecurity. I’m excited to move forward! This is going to be a wonderful year. 🙂

This is so beautiful, very poetic and very wise. I would like to become less sedentary in 2019 and healthier – hopefully give up smoking cigarettes, which is a big challenge for me. And overall to take better care of my health on all levels, emotional, mental, and spiritual as well. If I get better at taking care of myself it follows I will be able to take better care of others. I really love this post. Thank you for sharing it.

I enjoyed this post! You help me to keep my life in perspective and to focus on the positive. Funny, but there is a lot of things to be positive about and fewer things to dwell on when you change your focus! 🙂 I recently told my son to let this past year go, don’t continue to live in it, but learn from it and move forward. As for 2019 – I intent to spend lots of time giggling and sharing hugs with my grandson (he’s just a month old), enjoy my time with my youngest before she ventures off into her own world (she’s 16) and to help my son as best I can to continue to live in sobriety and to appreciate this life we have. Happy New and Joyous Year to you!!

i found the timing of your posts amazing , because they seem to always come out at the exact moment i need them. I have been thinking about time a lot lately and i am happy to know that i am not the only daydreamer. The paragrapgh that starts with “i wish…..reverie” , describes everything i have come to realize in a way the last few moths, so that is my revolution, manage, appreciate and be more conscious of the ways i am spending time.
thanks and i wish you happy holidays!!!

Thoughtful post. One of my best friends always encourages us to live more in the moment and I know I need to do that more especially as we age. I know we appreciate each day but how we utilize is very important. In the coming year I’d like to expand my love for family and friends. I’d love to create more photos, stories and carvings. And I hope to get a better work life balance. Sometimes the job wears me out, so that it affects my off time where I’m pursing these things.

I like this post very much, Dr. Perry. I was just thinking as I was driving to visit family, at the end of this year 2018…how what we call the future is always transforming into the past right before our eyes. And the brief nanoseconds that we call the present–are what we miss so often–focusing too much either on the past or the future.
Like you, I too, desire to spend this year enjoying the moments we are in.
May your New Year be filled with joy!

Life is definitely fleeting. I intend to not focus on my personal struggles this coming year. I’ve lost years of simply enjoying my daughter, she is two now. I will not repeat the same mistake of working to the point of exhaustion. I am grateful to see this early in her life and not when she is an adult with her own family.

Aah, I can so relate to that wonderful, lingering feeling of early mornings! What did come to mind is that we may be able to suspend time if we are fully present in it! Remember how it felt when we were kids? Summer vacation lasted forever! I’ve experienced that under other circumstances, too, so it’s not like time always passes in the same way. 🙂 As for dreams, it seems to me that they can be both of the waking and sleeping kind, and they can both enrich our lives. At least that’s what it feels like to me! 😉 My intention for 2019 is to be as PRESENT as possible! Thank you for all your lovely blogs!

“I am not going to allow my life to be overshadowed by my dreams.” Nicely worded.
Dreams like the heart deceive us. We have to use our mind and allow our heart to keep us kind. We use dreams to plan and switch off. Maybe.
Mind trumps.
